2022 11 Oaxaca With Michael deMeng Dia Siete

Tuesday, November 1, 2022

Breakfast was at 7:00 a.m. for me again today as I have plans. I am going to take a taxi to Eduardo Vasconcelos, the home field of the Guerreros de Oaxaca Liga Mexicana de BĂ©isbol baseball team. The reason is that alongside the baseball field is a wall with some of the best street art in Oaxaca.

Usually.

Since I have not been here since 2018, when the wall was repainted every year, it looks like the art has not be replaced since then (similar to the art by the Auditorio Guelaguetza).

Walkabout #7

The walk home from the baseball diamond proved to be interesting.

Some times when you take a photograph it also takes you

In the courtyard of the church there were sand paintings.

Every once in awhile, the harsh reality of life intervenes on the vacation atmosphere.

Class begins at 10:00 a.m. today. The break for lunch at 1 p.m. on our own so Michael deMeng, the Wersts, George and Heather and me went for a walk to find food.

So we ended up at El Tendajon which turned out to be a great choice for lunch. Here was the bartender.

Sometimes the randomness of life surprises me. Because our restaurant choice was our second choice after our first was closed, it was pure karma that we ate at El Tendajon, finished when we did, everyone else went back to the hotel while I decided to do a walkabout. I turned to my left...and there was Kim and Tim Abler, friends from Milwaukee. Kim is Vice-Principal of the High School of the Arts and Tim is Visual Arts Professor at Cardinal Stritch University. How cool is that?

After all the conviviality with the Ablers, I went for a walk.

Walkabout #8

I decided to go to the Museo de Filatelia de Oaxaca (The Oaxaca Museum of Stamp Collecting) because Colleen had recommended it in the workshop. In a continuation of today's serendipity, I met Colleen at the museum where she was waiting for a friend.

I walked back to the hotel from the Museum.

Now it was time to return to the workshop and finished up my project.

Tonight the whole group is went over to the PanteĂłn General, or General Cemetery, known colloquially as San Miguel.

One of the reasons we go to the PanteĂłn General is this game, in which BB's activate musical dioramas if you hit the target.

If you hit #9, a large robot sprays the audience with water--something that Michael seems to particularly enjoy.

Most of us decided to take a hike up into the Jalatlac neighborhood for a comparsa.

As it turned out, a really large crowd near a stage at an intersection divided our group and we lost our purpose. Some of us decided to skip the comparsa and head back towards our hotel for some food.

I ate dinner at El Fogoncita with Marilyn, John and Shelly. Then it was time to walk down the alcola to end the evening.
