In December, 2024, I went to New Orleans because I was accepted as a visiting artist at the Kolaj Institute. You can read about the whole experience at this blog.
Here are the details about the first project I worked on.
I brought these main items to NOLA to begin the project. On the 18" wood round I added the nails at home to avoid a lot of assemblage time in a collage residency. The other three items included a wooden serving tray, a metal candle holder and a plastic mask.
The round got covered by some rust paper I made
The wood serving tray
The metal candle holder--both got covered with pattern paper
I did a lose attachment to get some orientation going
The first collage at the Kolaj Institute by me
This is what I had by the end of day one of the residency
I wanted to make a mask in the style of this mask which I saw in Oaxaca this fall by the village of Santiago Juxtlahuaca craftsman Alejandro Guzman Vera. His carving talent, and then his painting techniques, were stunning and I used this mask as my model for the residency.
I texturized the mask so it would be paintable
The painting got going as the last thing of day two of the residency.
Most of day three was spent on a different project but I did get some detail painting done which finished up work on this project in NOLA.
When I got home from the residency, I went to work on this one to finish it up.

His skull got finished
Thus we have He Cultivates His Rows Of Starlight And Drags The Crescent Moon Through Dark Unfurrowed Fields, a title that comes from Joyce Sutphen's poem, The Farm. It is 21"H X 21"W X 5"D. It consists of a Round Wood, Wood Serving Tray, Metal Candle Holder, Poached Egg Ladle, Bead Skulls (4), Plastic Mask, Antlers, Mexican Tin (2), Nails (33), Paper and Paint.
