Recycled Figures Workshop at Walker's Point Center for the Arts

Recycled Figures Workshop at Walker's Point Center for the Arts

From July 20th this year until October 6th, I am the Featured Member Exhibition artist at the Walker's Point Center for the Arts in Milwaukee.  The Center's Executive Director Marcela “Xela” Garcia and I arranged for me to teach an after-school workshop.

I decided to teach a figurative structure with an up-cycling theme.  I started with plastic containers that normally would go in the recycling bin.

The bottles were filled with Great Stuff Big Gap Filler in order to stabilize the structure. I used old yard sticks for arms.

The head came from some vintage pool balls whiles the body was papier mached with light paper.

My class sample was mounted on an old roller skate.

By the time it came around to teach at Walker's Point, I had prepared the bottles with Great Stuff and drilled the pool balls at home in order to same time and work.

Xela Garcia's Recycled Figure

I had a blast with the kids who really seemed to get into doing the Recycled Figures.  Here are the final results:

My thanks go out to Walker's Point Center for the Arts, Xela Garcia, Della Wells and the entire staff and interns at the Center for giving me the opportunity to be with these kids and make art.

  1. What a wonderful workshop, and a great use of all of those old round doilies!
