Today we can sleep in a few minutes later so we do not get up until 5:15 a.m. Tea is delivered at 5:45 a.m. and by 6:30 a.m we assemble at the car park to take a short ride down hill to the bush.
Our guide this morning is Mark Johnson, owner of Ikuka, who is going to lead us on a walking safari.
Here is what we saw:
Yup--elephant dung
Ant Hill
Some fellow walkers
These ants are an irritating danger--ask Denice who got them in her pants.
Moisture in the bush
Grinding tools from the ancient past
Butati with head fruit
And, as was often true on these safaris, we were surprised. This time it was a gourmet breakfast discovered at the end of our walk.
After breakfast, Festo took us on a short game drive.
Here is what we saw:
Back so much later and full of food we request a 2:00 p.m. lunch before heading off to refresh. 2:00 p.m. found us back at the lodge for lunch.
We were sitting around the lodge after lunch trying to figure out if we wanted to alter our sleeping arrangements for the return flight on Thursday when one of the managers, Lucy, arrive with news that there had been a leopard sighting.
We planned on heading our early anyway so getting our crew in the Land Rover by 3:45 was no problem.
Here is what we saw:
After the excitement of finding a leopard, a mock charging elephant in the road seemed tame.
We waited at sunset for this giraffe to walk from our right across our front so we could shoot it as it walked passed the setting sun. Magic.
We arrived back at 7:00 p.m. where we were greeted with a warm towel and some Bailey’s. After freshening up we went to the lodge for dinner at 8:00 p.m. Tonight the entire camp guests ate together with two outgoing couples and six new arrivals. The table conversation was lively and funny with the main joke being me describing how Denice stalks her prey in a shopping mall.
We were back in our cabins by 10 and in bed to prepare for our early morning game drive.
