Today was World Collage Day and I was able to celebrate by taking a one day workshop in the Racine, WI, studio space of artist and teacher Crystal Neubauer.
Crystal is a wonderful teacher but also a very spiritual leader. Her workshops are as much about the "why" of making art as they are about the "how." I feel like most of us learn something about ourselves as well as our art as the day goes on.
Today we had a few exercises to get our brains and hands going in a good direction. Below are my four warm ups based on various challenges.
One of our collages involved us selecting our collage materials and then...surprise...passing them to our right for some one else to make sense out of our selections and make a collage.
This is what I did with the selections of Julia Kellogg
This is what Cris Smith did with the items I selected
Crystal had us take a photograph of an inspiration for a collage
Here is the collage that photograph inspired
A three item collage with symmetry (or so)
A collage based on the art of Wassily Kandinsky
The challenge here was one word--"Unnatural"
I had some time to create two collages on boards
Thanks to Crystal for offering this opportunity to celebrate World Collage Day.
