Our first mission of the day is to pack up our suitcase and get them out so our bus driver Marcia can load them in the van. For the third morning we packed our lunch and ate our breakfast before we mounted the bus at 7:45 a.m.
We have a major drive this morning (two and one half hours) to Kings Canyon National Park. The trip was broken up (and a bathroom break provided) at a fruit stand. We appreciated his willingness to let us use his porta-potties by purchasing all of his wares included fresh and dried fruits and vegetables.
Today it is all about the Giant Sequoia. We went up The Giant Tree Trail to see the General Grant.
Lunch followed at Grant Grove.
The afternoon drive, on twisty roads with multiple changes of elevation was spectacular.
At some point we crossed from Kings Canyon into the adjoining Sequoia National Park. That led us to the Roaring River waterfall. We stopped at Muir Rock to have a session of lessons on what it means to be custodians of the Earth.
At the close of the day we drove to our new home, the Hume Lake Conference Center. This facility is run by conservative Christians (no alcohol on the property) and it is full of teenagers (which appears to be their major purpose and source of income).
After dinner in the cafeteria our tour leader Chris Crawford presented a lecture on our relationship to birds and why that is important.
