2025 10 7 Northern California Calaveras State Park

Sunday, September 28, 2025

Today we got up at 7:00 a.m. and checked out of our hotel. Breakfast was at the Fresno Country Café before we headed north.

We made an antique stop in Jamestown where we had the opportunity to peruse multiple stores and make numerous purchases. The plan now is to ship things home.

Onto the California park Calaveras Big Trees State Park.

This state park reminded us of our great walk in Sequoia and in some ways, without a timetable, guide or fellow travelers, this walkabout the woods was a favorite of ours.

We took the North Grove walk. The park’s North Grove includes the “Discovery Tree,” a massive redwood stump that fell sometime in the 1850s. The story goes that it took 5 men and 22 days to count the rings of the trunk which led them to believe the tree had been 1300 years old. The park is accessible year-round with hundreds of miles of beautiful trails.

Our stayover location is the Best Western Cedar Inn and Suites in Angels Camp. After checking in we went to Camp, a restaurant on the golf course of a nearby restore complex. Taking a look around we figured this was a Silicon Valley getaway and a little out of our league. Our meal was nice but we were a bit awed by the whole thing.

Mileage for the Day: 181

Mileage for the Trip: 369
